As Detroit was gutting out a less-than-impressive 10-point win over NAIA power Aquinas, some potential in-state targets for years to come were making noise Wednesday (and Tuesday).
To be fair, Detroit’s four best players (Eulis Stephens, Xavier Keeling, Chase Simon and Eli Holman) were sidelined because of injury or ineligibility. Missing those four plus starting Eugene Blue would turn any contest into a struggle.
Some of these current high school standouts might play a major in UDM’s resurgance under coach Ray McCallum in the next half decade and can’t get on campus fast enough.
- Target 1 and priority 1A is Detroit Country Day point guard Ray McCallum Jr., who had 22 points and eight assists in an 82-63 win over Southfield-Lathrup. This comes after a 21 and 11 outing over the weekend against Southfield … while playing just 18 minutes.
Vince Baldwin is back at work and is officially on the record as saying McCallum is the best PG to come out of Michigan in the last 5-10 years, calling him a “baby-faced killer.” We’ve been in love with McCallum’s game since seeing him run with the Titans this summer at Calihan, where he was hands down the best player on the court. - Uncommitted DaShonte Riley had 11 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks in the same game.
- Lathrup’s Roy Marble Jr. went for 31 points in the same game. Marble is the son of Flint legend Roy Marble and can stroke it from very deep.
- Connor Creek’s John Hoskins Jr. (a Titan signee) had 26 and 14 against the Pontiac Acadamey of Excellence. Real tough competition, but a nice line regardless.
- Jamie Stewart helped Livonia Clarenceville to a four-point win, 79-75, over Redford Thurston by scoring 34 points and grabbing 13 boards. He his the game-winner with nine seconds left.
- Michael Talley III had 24 points, rebounding from a horrific shooting display against Roseville, and helped ABT to a 51-43 win over Bishop Foley. He confirmed a Detroit offer when we talked with him last Friday and gave a list of Detroit, Western Michigan, Providence and Oakland (didn’t name a leader claiming everyone was even).
- Mohammad Conde had 13 and 13, and 22 and 20 in his first two games, a pair of wins over Wayne and John Glenn.
